Timothy Ferchen on syntynyt vuonna 1947, syntymäpaikkanaan Niagara Falls, NY.
Hän opiskeli William Streetin ja John Beckin johdolla, Eastman School of Music, Rochester NY, sekä Jack Mooren johdolla, The Catholic University of America, Washington D.C.

Opiskeluiden jälkeen Ferchen vietti neljä vuotta Yhdysvaltain armeijan
orkesterissa, joka tunnetaan nimellä the United States Air Force Orchestra. Ilmavoimien pestin jälkeen hän muutti New Yorkiin vuonna 1972
ja samana vuonna hän liittyi the Steve Reich and Musicians -ensembleen,
jonka kanssa Ferchen työskenteli aina vuoteen 2000 saakka.

Muutto Suomeen oli tapahtunut vuonna 1974, ja vuosina 1977-2004
hän työskenteli Radion sinfoniaorkesterin lyömäsoitinten äänenjohtajana.
Ferchen perusti vuonna 1980 the Breath Ensemble -yhtyeen, jonka tarkoituksena oli esittää kamarimusiikkia, jota on sävelletty nimenomaan lyömäsoittimille. Yhtye toimi reilun 20 vuoden ajan.

Ferchenin sävellystyö alkoi samaan aikaan kuin Breath Ensemblen toiminta;
sävellyksiä esittivät Breathin lisäksi Sibelius-Akatemian lyömäsoitinopiskelijat.
Tim Ferchen toimi Sibelius-Akatemian lyömäsoitinopettajana 1990-luvulla.
Ferchenin sävellystuotantoa on esitetty mm. Skandinaviassa, USA:ssa ja
Kanadassa. Tapiola Sinfonietta kantaesitti hänen marimbakonserttonsa,
jonka Radion sinfoniaorkesteri on sittemmin nauhoittanut.
Ferchenin musiikkia on kustantanut Edition Svitzer ja Music Finland.
